Some Of The Methods To Improve Wort Plato

It is very common that the wort plato is low in our brewing process. There might be many factors such as over sparging, temperature controlling in mashing is not good etc. How to get higher plato beer?

In fact, There are several ways to improve wort plato.

A) High quality malt can improve leaching efficiency to get higher plato wort. Also well dissolved malt is a good choice.

B) For mashing process, decoction mashing and infusion mashing is available. Usually for good quality malt, two steps infusion mashing is enough. For lower quality malt, maybe we need three steps or more infusion mashing and decoction mashing to extract more sugar.  This is because the various temperature rests activate different enzymes.

C) Prolong the boiling time. The more water evaporates, the higher plato the wort will have. But the boiling time should not be too long. Or it would accelerate the oxidation and increase the color of the wort. That may cause a bad flavour to your beer.

D) Increase the ratio of material. But the material ratio also shouldn’t be too high. Water and material in a good ratio range is the best. Since too much material in mash is not good for lautering and that may lead to temperature in mashing process is not easy to control.

E) The milling situation could also influence the mashing. If the grain particle is not small enough, then the grain will have smaller surface area to contact water in mashing process. That may directly cause lower plato wort.

F) We also could add sugar in brewing process. That is the directly and easy method to improve the wort plato.
