What is a Wort Grant?
Wort grant is a small wort collection vessel, it is a buffer tank inserted between the lauter tun and the brew kettle.
In the lautering process, Did you ever experience that the grain bed was very compact then be stuck? Do you know why?
Now let’s return to the lautering process.
The wort from the lauter tun flows slower and slower, but the pump is still working. When the speed of wort flows cannot match the speed of pump works, the grain bed may be compacted and cause a vacuum between the false bottom and the tank bottom. If it goes on like this, finally result is that the tank bottom or false bottom may out of shape or the pump run dry then damage. So if there a buffer tank to collect the wort, and the pump works on the buffer tank instead of works on lauter tun directly. The wort could flow by gravity and we can control the pump easily, so that what we mentioned above wouldn’t happen. The buffer tank could be called a wort grant.
