What is a spunding valve used for?


 
For the spunding valve, it has nothing to do with a bright tank. Actually, the spunding valve is only used for the beer fermenters during the fermentation period, especially for the beer fermentation under pressure.
 
Usually the beer is fermenting in the fermenters under zero pressure, because the CO2 blow off pipe is always open to release the internal pressure during the main fermentation period. After the main fermentation period, the brewer might close the valve on CO2 blow off pipe and allow the residual sugar to break down further. At this time, the Pressure Relief Valve, as a necessary part for releasing the internal pressure inside the beer fermenter, will work. And, it only has a fixed limit to release the pressure, let's say 2 bar. That means, when the internal pressure reaches about 2 bar, the Pressure Relief Valve will work to release the pressure and protect the fermenters from explosion or vacuum pressure.
 
Well, the spunding valve is a similar pressure relief valve with an adjustable limit. For our spunding valve, it can be adjusted between 0.2 bar to 2.2 bar. That means, during the main fermentation period, if you want to ferment the beer under a little pressure, let's say 0.3 bar, to allow a small few of CO2 dissolving into the beer and thus having a better taste , then a spunding valve will help. And, with a spunding valve, you can distinguish the main fermentation period by seeing a lof of bubbles coming up from the transparant cup of the valve. Of course, you need to fill the cup of the valve with sterile liquid ahead of time.
 
So, the pressure relief valve is a necessary part for fermenters and the spunding valve is only an optional item. It mostly depends on if you need to ferment the beer under pressure. If you don't ferment the beer under pressure with your receipe, then you don't need to have a spunding valve with the tank.
