A glass grant is also called a wort balance column, wort grant or lauter grant. So let me introduce the glass grant and the main advantages of it to you in this article.
 
Just as its name implies, it is mainly used for lautering in the beer brewing process after mashing.
 
A grant is a small wort collection vessel, usually made of transparent glass and placed between the Lauter Tun and Boil Kettle, normally found in micro breweries. It is an intermediate vessel in which liquid is collected on its way from the lauter tun to the boil kettle, offers beer brewers the valuable information about the condition of wort, the runoff quality and also serves as a handy buffer between spent grain and wort.
 
The main advantages of a glass grant are as follows:
 
1. In most brewery system that drove by pumps, the glass wort grant allows the wort flowing down in natural gravity and provides a buffer between the outflow from the lauter tun and the inflow to the boil kettle. This mitigates the potential for a vacuum caused by the over-suction of the pump, which might compact the grain bed and cause a stuck mash.
 
2. The brewer may take wort samples from the grant with which to conveniently measure the PH of the runoff and avoid over-sparging.
 
3. Obviously, the brewer can also observe the condition of wort entering the grant and pump it back to the mash tun until it has become enough clear.
