Brewery Valves

Brewery Valves

Today I want to talk about the on/off control of a brewery:

Valves- butterfly valves, ball valves and a few others which were usually used in a micro brewery.

1.Butterfly valve

Inside of a butterfly valve you can see there is a disc inside.
That rotating disc is what open and closes the butterfly, the gasket is replaceable and they have a great strong on/off. So the most common valve in a brewery is butterfly valve.
When looking at a butterfly at a brewery, how to tell that it's on or off is by looking at if it's parallel or perpendicular to the pipe that it's connected to. Parallel with the pipe that's connected to or hose is open, perpendicular to the hose that's connected to is closed.

2.Ball valve

Why it's called a ball valve?
If you take off the ball valve you can see the action, it turns a ball on the inside that has a hole in it.
Ball valves are usually found on gas lines or water lines rather than product beer lines.

3.Gate Valve

Gate valves work by just bringing a gate like that down and locking it out, the kind your common garden hose faucet. They're known to have good flow control but not a very great on/off, so to make sure they're shut off you really have to.

4.Diaphragm valve

You can find diaphragm valves behind heat exchangers.
It look like a gate valve but instead of having a gate that after you blocks the pathway of water. It's more of a diaphragm that pushes down.
Really good sanitary cleaning on them and good flow control.

5.Needle valve

When you take it off, you can see it comes to a point and the point makes it accurate flow control valve. It is used a lot when mixing the cold water and hot
water to get right temperature.
And if you want accurate flow of cold water. Needle valve can come in handy.

Cheers!
