Do We Need a BBT at the Beginning of Building Breweries?

A brite beer tank, also known as a bright beer tank or conditioning tank, is typically not one of the first pieces of equipment you need when building a brewery. Brite beer tanks are primarily used for the final stages of beer production, such as conditioning, carbonation, and storage of finished beer before packaging. In the early stages of setting up a brewery, your focus is usually on essential equipment required for brewing and fermenting beer.

Here's a general sequence of equipment you might consider when building a brewery:

Brewing Equipment: Start with the brewing vessels, which include the mash tun, lauter tun, kettle, and whirlpool. These are essential for the mashing, boiling, and initial stages of fermentation.

Fermentation Tanks: After brewing, you'll need fermentation tanks where the wort is fermented by yeast to produce beer. These tanks are typically the primary fermenters.

Glycol Cooling System&Cold Storage: Glycol water tanks and chillers would be necessary for your brewery to cool down the mashing liquid and beer after they’ve been transferred into the fermenters.
Having refrigerated storage for ingredients like hops and yeast is crucial.

Piping and Plumbing: Proper plumbing and piping are essential for transferring liquids between vessels, maintaining temperature control, and ensuring sanitation.

Quality Control Equipment: Consider laboratory equipment for quality control, including tools for measuring gravity, pH, and other essential parameters.

The decision to add brite beer tanks depends on your production scale, beer styles, and packaging preferences. Some small breweries may skip brite tanks initially by packaging beer directly from fermentation tanks, while larger breweries often find them essential for quality control and consistency.

In summary, while brite beer tanks are valuable for producing high-quality beer and maintaining consistency, they are typically not among the first pieces of equipment to consider when building a brewery. The specific equipment needs should align with your brewery's scale, production goals, and business plan.
