Should You Equip Your Brewhouse with a Wort Grant?

When we talk about brewery equipment, the brewhouse is the most important part of the brewery equipment, making the wort for beer fermentation, and there is usually a wort grant in the brewhouse. Now I am very happy to discuss the wort grant with you.

What is the wort grant?
Wort Grant is a small wort collection vessel, open to the air, placed between the lauter tun and the wort kettle.
The traditional purpose of a grant was:
(a)To avoid vacuum in the lauter tun or mash/lauter tun during wort pumping for recirculation or filling the kettle, which could seal the mash to the false bottom, thus causing turbid worts or stuck mashes;
(b)To allow the brewer to observe wort clarity and wort flow;
(c)In larger systems with multiple lauter tun outlets, to determine whether all parts of the grain bed flow sufficiently well or require raking or other measures to improve flow-through.
(d)The wort grant can assist by promoting a smooth and steady flow of wort, reducing turbulence that might introduce unwanted oxygen.

What is the role of wort grant in Brewhouse?
It is easy to pull wort from the lauter tun faster than the grain bed wants it to flow, when using a pump to move wort from the lauter tun to the kettle. It will compact grain bed and cause a stuck runoff. Aside from being a large pain, the stuck runoff can also damage the wort pump because magnetically coupled pumps can be damaged if run dry.

So we need a grant to provide a buffer between the effluent from the filter tank and the inflow from the boiler to reduce the possibility of a vacuum.
